Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region (WCSWR) is a long standing, not-for-profit charitable organization that provides shelter and support for women and their children who have suffered domestic violence. Its history dates back to 1978.  WCSWR owns and operates two shelters, Anselma House in Kitchener and Haven House in Cambridge, each a 45-bed facility; it maintains a 24-hour crisis line and offers outreach programs in a collaborative and progressive environment. Its programs fall into two main categories: residential programs at the two aforementioned shelters and, regional outreach services for abused women and children.

Haven House began in 1978 in a house on Water Street in Cambridge; it was called the Rotary Family Centre. In 1981, along with a move to Argyle Street, the name changed to Family Crisis Shelter. In 1991, a new 11 bed shelter was built at 562 Concession Rd. in Cambridge. In 1998 the name changed once again to Women’s Crisis Services of Cambridge and North Dumfries. In 2002 the Concession Road location was expanded to 30 beds. The new Acorn Way shelter, a 45-bed facility was built in 2016.

Anselma House began in 1978 in a house on Duke Street in Kitchener; it was called Anselma House and retains this name today. The demand increased and a new 20 bed shelter was built in 1989 on Ann Street in Kitchener. In 2011 a new 45 bed shelter was built on Heritage Drive in Kitchener.

In 2001, the activities of the two shelters were brought under a single agency, WCSWR.

With the retirement of its CEO, WCSWR is looking for its next leader.

The Position:

Reporting to the Board of Directors of Women's Crisis Services of Waterloo Region (WCSWR), the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for the management of all aspects of the operation and services. The CEO leads the overall strategic direction of the agency and is accountable for human resources, all programming, property and finances including fundraising.

Experience & Education

  • Ten years or substantial senior management experience in a not for profit, social services organization is essential.
  • Masters of Social Work (MSW) degree preferred but related degrees will be considered.
  • Experience that demonstrates strong business knowledge and experience; a degree or diploma in business is an asset.
  • Management experience in the Violence Against Women sector is an asset.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and conflict resolution skills are important.
  • Proven management experience in a unionized setting.
